********

Selden Rodman left us last Saturday, November 2, 2002 after a long and richly productive life,
characterized by individuality and non-conformity. He was 93 years old.
If there was a Haitian Art Hall of Fame, he would have to be a charter member.

After his first visit to Haiti in 1938,
he wrote a play on the life of Toussaint L'Ouverture which opened in Port-au-Prince in 1942. He served in the OSS during WWII and then returned to Haiti
where he was co-director of the Centre d'Art and was among those who supervised the landmark mural project at Trinity Cathedral.

Selden wrote more than 40 books, poetry, prose and of course,
his authoritive works on Haitian and Brazilian art. His classic,
"Haiti, the Black Republic" published in 1954, is still an insightful guide to the Haitian culture and spirit even though much of the tourist information is outdated after half a century.

Besides his books, he left us a wonderful collection of folkart, Haitian, Mexican, Cuban and more, at Ramapo College in Northern New Jersey.

O Our sympathies to his wife of 40 years, Carole, and his children, Beebe, Carla and Van. We will miss him .

ZEPHIRIN 2002

A series of wonderfully intense paintings that Frantz completed in Pittsburgh on the first day of 2002. These paintings are so rich and complicated in technique that they are proving to be very challenging to photograph. They are, without a doubt, the best work that Zephirin has done in more than 2 years.

December 2, 2000 Gwen Grant Mellon will be buried today on a hillside overlooking the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Deschapelles, Haiti, The hospital that she and her late husband, Dr. Larry Mellon, founded in 1954. Mrs. Mellon passed away this past Wednesday in Miami due to complications during hip surgery. She visited her family in Pittsburgh often over the years and I felt priveleged to know her. She was a great friend to Haiti and to Haitian art as well; she encouraged and supported Saincilus Ismael and the many students of his who painted in and around Deschapelles . Godspeed to Mrs. Mellon..

***********************************

Two of the brightest stars in the Haitian art firmament flickered out in February, 2000 as Saincilus Ismael and Pierre -Joseph Valcin "returned to Guinee" as they say in Haiti when someone passes on. Ismael, the master of Deschappelles, inspired an entire school of artists in the Artibonite with his depictions of Haitian life rendered in byzantine detail.
P-J Valcin, the " prince of the naives" was one of the precious few self-taught artists still painting.
