SINCE 1974

This is Room 10A Haitian paintings by Arijac.

Arijac (Harry Jacques) was born on August 11, 1937 in Gonaives, Haiti. After primary school he studied architecture through the International Correspondence School and later worked as a draftsman for the architectural firm of Sacha Thebaud and for the Haitian government’s school construction division. He also played the drums in a hotel band. In 1965 he exhibited his first paintings. Early in his career, he used the encaustic method of painting, a process that dates back to the time of Alexander the Great; it combines beeswax, turpentine and pigments. He has exhibited internationally and is one of the masters of Haitian impressionism .
