This is Room 40 . A Haitian painting by Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue.

Gourgue was born in Port-au-Prince in 1930, the son of a French psychiatrist and a Haitian woman who was said to have been a Mambo. At the tender age of 17, he participated in a show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and one of his paintings, "The Magic Table", was purchased for the permanent collection of the museum. He lived in Spain for many years but made annual trips to Haiti to refresh his vision. His subject matter ranges from simple everyday village occurrences to nativities and exotic vodou images, but generally his work imparts a dark, surreal energy. He moved back to Haiti in the late 1980's and died suddenly after a stroke in 1996.

Some of this Gourgue information was paraphrased from the Ute Stebich book
"A Haitian Celebration"

The painting comes with this nice note from the former owner: " I PURCHASED 4 GOURGUES FROM THE WIFE OF AN ART DEALER
IN N.H.  THIS OLD MAN DEALT IN ENGLISH AND FRENCH ART. BUT BELIEVE IT OR NOT THEY VACATIONED IN
HAITI MANY MANY YEARS AGO AND HE PERSONALLY ONLY HAD HAITIAN ART IN HIS HOUSE. HE LIKED IT FOR HIMSELF BUT FELT THERE WAS NO MARKET FOR HAITIAN ART AT THAT TIME. OVER THE YEARS HE WOULD SELL OFF A PIECE OR 2 THAT HE TIRED OF.
WE BECAME LONG DISTANNT FRIENDS,I DID VISIT ONCE AND WAS AMAZED AT THE CALIBER HAITIAN ART HE HAD. WHEN HE PASSED AWAY HIS WIFE
CALLED ME AS SHE NEW I WAS INTO HAITIAN ART AND I BOUGHT  I THINK IT WAS 17 PAINTINGS FROM HER. SHE NEVER LOVED THE HAITIAN WORKS AS MUCH AS HE HAD.  I REALLY WAS LUCKY TO GET THEM. I SOLD THE OTHER GOURGUES BUT KEPT THE RED FLOWER PAINTING FOR
MYSELF. ITS BEEN ON MY WALL IN THE LIVING ROOM I GUESS 8-10 YEARS. ITS A RESTFUL COLORFUL PAINTING NICE TO LIVE WITH.
IT IS NOT DATED BUT THE MAN TOLD ME HE BOUGHT THEM FROM GOURGUE IN THE LATE 50 S. IT IS IN WONDERFUL CONDITION IT IS ON MASONITE
BOARD, AND THE FRAME IS A GREAT OLD HAND CARVED FRAME. WHICH ARE SO VALUABLE TODAY."
