A gallery of Haitian Art
SINCE 1974

This is Room 56E. Haitian market paintings by Jean Louisius.

Louisius was born in Jeremie, Haiti in 1952. He worked as a carpenter until relocating to
Port-au-Prince in 1974, where he began to paint. After experimenting with various subjects he developed his trademark style of market painting which has been widely imitated through the years. He is a prolific producer and his work, though repetitive and formulized, remains appealing and somehow fresh.
