Montas Antoine was born in Leogane, to the west of Port-au-Prince in 1926. In 1950, after a turn in the army, he became a security guard at the Centre d’Art and began to paint. By 1960 he was a full time artist. His subject matter is varied, ranging from still-lives that feature oversized brightly-colored flowers to images of voodoo gods and goddesses. He also does scenes of Haitian life, vodou ceremonies, cockfights and brothels. He passed away in 1988. A number of his early works were shown at the Huntington Museum of Art in 2004 in the exhibit, "The Winslow Anderson Collection of Haitian Art". We have a limited number of catalogs from that show which illustrate a few of his paintings |
