Paintings by the Cap Haitian artist, Bermy Dorvil.

Bermy Dorvil was born in Dondon, a small village in the north of Haiti on November 3, 1964. He attended secondary school at the Pedagogue Modern in nearby Cap Haitian where he excelled in Art. In 1979, He began to study in the atelier of the master, Philome Obin, and was soon selling his work to tourists from the cruise ships. By 1980 he had joined the Centre d"Art in Port-au-Prince. His style is influenced by Philome Obin but he would better be described as a modern primitive; his paintings are executed with a high degree of technical skill.

His work has been exhibited at the Tsopen Museum in Amsterdam as well as in galleries across Europe, Canada and the United States. He moved to the USA in 1990 and has participated in many shows and has been published in magazines and received numerous awards for his work.

Bermy Dorvil's statement: It is through my paintings that I can express myself, that I can relate the story of the daily life and the tribulations of the Haitian people, their culture and the story of my country and its natural beauty. My purpose is to send a message of love, positive energy, balance and tranquility through my art. I believe it is a tremendous responsibility to be an artist. The world we live in , the people around us and the messages we send sometimes become one in a painting. Through art I express a view, not only about my country but also the world and what we are. I am continually working on different projects. These projects consist of various themes and subjects. Matter that utilizes my abilities as an artist. If I had to stop painting, I think I would spend the reat of my life with great sadness in my heart because I would no longer have the privilege to share what has happened, what I see and what is yet to come.
