Arijac (Harry Jacques) was born on August 11, 1937 in Gonaives, Haiti. After primary school he studied architecture through the International Correspondence School and later worked as a draftsman for the architectural firm of Sacha Thebaud and for the Haitian government’s school construction division. He also played the drums in a hotel band. In 1965 he exhibited his first paintings. Early in his career, he used the encaustic method of painting, a process that dates back to the time of Alexander the Great; it combines beeswax, turpentine and pigments. He has exhibited internationally and is one of the masters of Haitian impressionism . |
