This is a new book of short stories set in Haiti. Mr. Orem demonstrates an intimate knowledge of the customs and beliefs of Haitian peasants. One of the things that has always fascinated me about Haiti is the line where the reality ends and the magic begins in the mind of the Haitian you happen to be interacting with at a given moment. That line figures prominently in this excellent book.
